Jewelry Appraisals: What It Is & Why You Need One
The time has arrived for purchasing a fine jewelry design of your selection. Whether you are buying an engagement ring, wedding band, pendant, necklace, bracelet, or other noteworthy accessories containing fine metals and stones, each of these unique items is accompanied by a price tag. A jewelry appraisal may be your next best step for protecting your keepsake item and preserving its value over time.
What is a Jewelry Appraisal?
A jewelry appraisal is a professional document evaluating the make and quality of the piece. The jewelry appraisal assesses any measurable characteristics of the item and assigns an estimated monetary value. Only certified professionals may provide jewelry appraisals.
What Do Jewelry Appraisals Include?
A jewelry appraisal is a document encompassing various information about the piece. At BY VIVE, our jewelry appraisals include the stone/diamond quality, metal type, weights, designer markings, potential vintage finds, and anything else that may be included in the valuation. Each appraisal is completed by a Graduate Gemologist who studied at the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Our appraisals commonly include photos of the item using different angles or a single detailed photo. Each appraisal is signed and stamped by the professional performing the appraisal.
What Kind of Jewelry Appraisal Do I Need?
Some companies provide only jewelry appraisals with basic information. At BY VIVE ours are more in-depth and as so, are good for insurance purposes.
Please note: A jewelry appraisal is not the same thing as a diamond grading report frequently provided when buying a diamond at a jewelry store. These gem certificates serve as an accurate quality report of the diamond, while jewelry appraisals focus on assigning a monetary value to the entire finished piece.
Three Reasons Why You Need a Jewelry Appraisal:
- Jewelry appraisals help to easily validate ownership of your important jewelry items. Jewelry appraisals can help substantiate proof of ownership in case your jewelry is ever stolen and recovered by police.
- The value of the item can be used by insurance companies if your item is lost, stolen, or recovered by the police. Providing a copy of your jewelry appraisal for your item will help avoid disputes if you need to file a claim.
- You may need a jewelry appraisal for retail replacement value, reselling, or tax purposes. Having a resale appraisal is strongly recommended. Insurance companies may value jewelry at its retail replacement value, which is often significantly less than resale. The appraisal will state what the purpose of the appraisal is and how it may be used.
